Independence Day!

3 07 2014

Dale BertramThe 4th of July is one of my favorite holidays. Most of us are looking forward to the long weekend this year and I just wanted to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday.

I also want to remind people that drinking and driving don’t mix so if alcohol is part of your celebration, be sure to have a pre-determined designated driver. The 4th of July averages more collision claims than any other holiday. The law enforcement here in Phoenix will be out in full force working hard to keep us all safe and to keep impaired drivers off the road. Spending the 4th in jail or in the hospital (or being the cause of someone else being injured or worse) is not the way to celebrate our independence!

Another reminder is to make sure you and all of your passengers wear your seat belt. Studies show seat belts are 45 percent effective in preventing fatalities when worn correctly. July is one of the deadliest months for motor vehicle crashes. It is a good time for parents to stress the importance of wearing seat belts to teen drivers. Vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for young people. Fatal car crashes involving teen drivers fell by about a third over five years, according to a new federal report that credits tougher restrictions on younger drivers. Still…we need to be vigilant and make our teens aware.

There were 9,600 fatal accidents involving drivers who were 16 or 17 during a five-year span, and more than 11,000 people died, including more than 4,000 of the teen drivers and more than 3,400 of their passengers. The main reason fewer deaths are occurring now is because most states have tougher laws about when teens can drive and when and how many passengers they can have with them. It is not because teens are becoming safer drivers.

Also be mindful of leaving children unattended in hot vehicles. Many young lives have been lost this way. If you see a child left in a hot vehicle please call 911 immediately.

It is easy for all of us to become distracted while driving. This year, let’s all strive to be more alert, safer drivers.

Happy 4th of July from all of us at Fairway Auto Repair!
