Give Your Brakes A Break

2 02 2011

Properly operating brakes are vitally important to your car’s health, your health, your passengers’ health and those you share the road with!

Over time it is perfectly normal for your brakes to wear down.  Those who drive in areas where frequent stopping and starting is common will wear their brakes out faster than those who do expressway driving.  We call this severe driving because it is more wearing on a vehicle in many ways.  Eventually though, all brakes need a little tender loving care or replacement.

Here are a few warning signs that your brakes need attention:

  • Low brake pedal or brake fade
  • Car pulls to one side during braking
  • Shimmy or pulsating feeling when you apply the brakes
  • Squeaky noise
  • Grinding noise
  • Spongy or mushy feeling when you step on the brake
  • Brake pedal is hard to depress

The typical brake inspection includes checking the brake linings, the drums and rotors and the brake fluid. When your brakes are showing the above symptoms, it almost always means the brake pads/shoes need replacing. However, if it is more serious, the rotors will need to be turned or replaced.

Taking care of them before they get to the metal on metal stage is the best plan.  It is safer, it takes less time to repair and it is a lot less expensive!

Give your brakes a break and have them checked out!

Happy Motoring!
